Celestron Digital Microscope #44302 for Linux

I got a new toy recently, the Celestron Digital Microscope (#44302) to help with microelectronics and support my learning with gardening.

I'm currently trying to configure a Linux driver for this device which seems to follow the Universal Video System (UVS) standard. The vendor and device ID was not registered with linux-usb.org, so I submitted the patch to add the device.

For anyone curious, the output of lsusb follows:

output of `lsusb -v` for Celestron Digital Microscope #44302

  1. Followup -- I got a reply from Celestron saying the chipset is proprietary, and they would not release any technical details.

I've been using the Windows software, which seems to work well. I may revisit the Linux Celestron driver sometime in the future.

  2. Considering this stereo binocular scope for my son who enjoys identifying plants (college/research level) :Celestron 44202 Advanced Stereo Microscope. Any experience with it or opinion on it over the digital scope you have used from Celestron? Now that you have had your scope for a while, how do you like it?

  3. So far, I like it. I've used it several times for microelectronics to identify small components, and some gardening to identify and take pictures of plants, insects and especially some of the diseases I've found on my plants.

To compare the Celestron 44202 and 44302 I would say...

Celestron 44202 has binocular vision, better for 3D visual but it's limited to 40x magnification. It seems like bottom lighting is useful for slides. It doesn't seem to support USB computer imaging.

Celestron 44302 has single camera, USB only vision (no eye piece) max 200x magnification. Only white LED lights from the top, so it's not usable with slides. I also found that the Linux UVC video driver will support it, so I'm happy with that.

  4. So were you trying to output to a Linux camera?

  5. I'm looking for an inexpensive USB magnifying camera to examine edges of various metals and processes wrt sharpening quality for cutlery. Do you think the 44302 would work well for this application? Thanks!

  6. @covert - I was trying to hook this camera device to my Gentoo Linux workstation. I'm not sure I understand your question about output *to* a camera?

@Dr John - I think it would work pretty well. I'll post more information and photos taken with this microscope camera.
